In accordance with state law, the City of Madison Board of Canvassers conducted a recount of the votes cast for the office of Alder in District 19 during the April 1 Spring Election. Acting Clerk Michael Haas ordered a recount be conducted after a petition was lawfully filed by candidate Anthony Nino Amato on April 7. The recount was administered in the Madison Municipal Building with a hand count of the ballots in Wards 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, and 96. The initial official results indicated a margin of 9 votes, with John Guequierre receiving 3,480 votes and Anthony Nino Amato receiving 3,471 votes.

After recounting the ballots on April 10, there was one additional vote for Amato in Ward 94 and no other changes to the vote totals, resulting in a final margin of 8 votes. The tabulator initially did not count this ballot because both candidates were selected but one candidate was crossed out. After being reviewed by both candidates, it was agreed the voter's intent was to cast a ballot for Amato.

The Board of Canvassers has certified this result. Candidate Amato has indicated that he intends to waive his right to a court appeal so that the Clerk may issue a certificate of election to candidate Guequierre without waiting for the appeal deadline of April 17th.
